Until 1496 different peoples such as Christians, Moors and Jews were living together in the same city. But from that date onwards the Portuguese king Manuel I expelled all religious minorities that weren’t willing to convert to Catholicism. Altough that decision changed the course of history, there are still vestiges of the jewish presence in Lisbon dating back from the 15th century. More recently, in the 20th century,Portugal played a fundamental role when the Jewish fled to the USA during World War 2.
Did you know that the Jewish people until the 15th century had their own district where they could freely practice their religion? Did you know that many portuguese surnames were created by the Jewish in an attempt to escape from Inquisiton? A Christian surname would work as proof of conversion. Did you know that the converted Jewish people, called new-Christians, had to create a new plate to try to disguise their gastronomical traditions?
This tour will make you understand the Jewish presence in the layout of Lisbon and also feel the Jewish roots in Portuguese traditions. Come and learn more about all this history and these stories.
