This tour will make you feel like a true “alfacinha” (Lisbon inhabitant). We will visit the heart of the city: the 11th-century São Jorge Castle, built by the Arabs on the site where the first inhabitants of Lisbon settled in the 7th century BC, offering breathtaking views; the picturesque and oldest neighborhood in the city, Alfama, with its labyrinthine alleys ready for effective defense against enemies arriving at the port; the lively commercial downtownwith its orthogonal plant bbuilt after the tragic earthquake of 1755; the bohemian Bairro Alto where at night we can listen to the traditional musical genre Fado and also have a drink or a meal; the elegant Chiado with its centuries-old shops and historic theaters, frequented in the past by the nobility. Located 20 minutes from the center is the must-visit neighborhood of Belém, from where, in the 16th century, Portuguese navigators set off in search of the New World. Here we will visit the Jerónimos Monastery* and the Belém Tower, both declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as the Monument to the Discoveries, where we will see the Map of Maritime Discoveries. Here we can understand why Portuguese is still spoken in so many corners of the world.
