Lisbon is a paradise for shopping lovers. There several shopping districts at all prices.

Traditional shops are located in Baixa (downtown), Chiado and Bairro Alto districts.

Bairro Alto

This is a 16th century district considered to be very picturesque. It used to be a district of homeless, prostitutes and Fado singers and now it is inhabited by actors, poets and other artists.

It is the heart of bohemian Lisbon. There you’ll find restaurants, bars and many trendy shops.

It is quite calm during the day but it gets transformed during the night.

Some shops stay opened until mid-night and the 2 main streets are Norte and Rosa street.

Chiado

One of the most elegant districts in the city, to see and be seen.

Chiado district revived after a terrible fire in late 80’s that destroyed part of it and there you ca see many elegant shops, historical libraries and charismatic coffee shops.

You can’t miss Bertrand library and A Brasileira coffee shop, one of the oldest in the city and the meeting point of intellectuals and poets such as Fernando Pessoa.

Baixa

It was totally rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Nowadays it is our downtown, the main commercial area of the city. There you can see 100 year-old shops and street artists in their daily performances.

You can find everything you need in Augusta street, the main street in Lisbon that connects the two main squares of the city: Commerce square and Rossio square. Besides the shopping you can see the busy people walking in different directions.

Liberdade (Liberty) Avenue

If you prefer international designers shops this is where you need to go.

Here you can find shops such as Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

This is the most expensive avenue in Portugal and it is the 10th most luxurious avenue in the world.

Take a look at the Portuguese cobbled stone pavement too. It’s design is simply incredible.

If you prefer to go to a shopping center, here are the options:

Colombo, Vasco da Gama, El Corte Inglês,and Freeport Alcochete, the biggest outlet in Europe.

Colombo

It has more than 400 shops and it is located within a subway trip: blue line – Colegio Militar station.

Vasco da Gama

It is located in the Nations Park, (where Expo 98 was held) . It is one of the most pleasant areas of the city to enjoy the 21st century Lisbon.

Vasco da Gama shopping center is named after the Portuguese navigator that reached India. That is why the inside of the shopping has maritime decoration.

You can reach it by subway: red line – Oriente station.

El corte Inglês

It is located next to Eduard VII park and this is a corporate shop.

Freeport

It is located in Alcochete, 25 minutes from Lisbon. To get there you can use a free shuttle that departs from Marques de Pombal square everyday at 9.30 am and 12 am. This is the biggest outlet in Europe where you can find international shops with reduced prices.

Feira da Ladra

If you love markets, Feira da Ladra might be nice to visit.

It is a popular market of second hand objects where you can find everything such as a vinyl disk or a radio that was stolen from you the previous night.

Every Tuesdays and Saturdays in Alfama district, by the National Pantheon. You can take 28 tram to reach the market.
